GenesReunited

GenesReunited

GenesReUnited states that they are" The UK's no.1 family history site with 9 million members", so they must be doing something right.

Part of the famous 'Friends Reunited' group. Genes Reunited is now owned by ITV and manages the 1901 census website on behalf of the National Archives. If you need to carry out a genealogy search, then I would recommend that this is the first place you try. It's one of the most useful genealogy websites I've come across to date. You cannot get a better endoirsement that the ITV - Britains leading television station.

What do GenesReUnited offer:

Genes Reunited helps people find living relations and takes them back in time to discover their family history, by offering:
• An unrivalled, easy-to-use family tree builder
• 650 million names in family trees and historical records
• Census Records 1841-1901
• Birth, Marriage & Death indexes 1837-2004
• Military Records including WW1 and WW2 death records

FREE Genealogy Research Site:

The thing I like about GenesReUnited against the other ancestry sites is that it is actaully FREE to search your family tree.

Genes Reunited visitors register free to search and build their family tree. To contact other members to discover family connections they need to subscribe (sale), to view detailed census and bmd results they need to purchase pay-per-view record credits (sale) or become a Gold Member (sale).

Pros:

Yes, a free genealogy research site - It is free to register with the site and start building your family tree as they do have a family tree building programme. Its also free to send and receive messages through the site. However, if you do get in contact with another person researching the same family, you have to be a full member in order to access their family tree and genealogy search detail on line.

If you do sign up for this site, you receive regular email letting you know when new names are added to the site that match the surnames on your tree. This can be quite useful if, like me, you become an infrequent visitor to the site. If you send a message to another member, you will receive an email to let you know when you receive a reply. You also get emails when you are sent a message from another member. These emails always contain a link directly into the message you have received so that you dont have to exit your email inbox to check the message.

Cons: Problems used to be experienced with the reliability of the software. This has recently been upgraded and now appears to have solved earlier problems

Guarantee: You just pay a monthly subscription and can stop whenever you want.

Price: Prices start from around $10

Summary: Not as expensive as Ancestry.com, and goes a long way to provide the same level of searching. A very easy to navigate site and I would definately recommend to anyone, especially newcomers to family history research. It can put you in touch with others who have similar interests and you can combine your findings.
